Bala Mohammed is a Presidential aspirant, a Nigerian Politician who currently serves as the 16th Governor of Bauchi State, a former Minister of Federal Capital Territory and former lawmaker that represented the Bauchi South Senatorial District. Born on Oct. 5, 1958, as a native of Duguri Town in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State. He is married to Hajiya Aisha Bala Mohammed with children. He is a practising Muslim.
He began his primary education from 1965-1971 in Bauchi at Duguri Primary School, and later obtained his WASSCE from Government Secondary School in 1976.
Bala Mohammed obtained an Advanced Level Certificate from the North-East College of Art and Science in 1979 and went further in bagging a B.A degree in English at the University of Maiduguri in 1982.
Bala Mohammed began his career as a journalist from 1982-1984, where he worked as an Editor for The Democrat, a Kaduna State based Newspaper, and also for the Mirage Newspaper in Jos within 1982-1983.
In 1984, he left journalism for the civil service where he worked as an Administrative Officer at the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he served until 1994.
He was later redeployed as a Principal Administrative Officer in the Cabinet Secretariat of the Presidency.
Bala Mohammed’s rise through the civil service ranks made him to occupy several administrative leadership roles as the Chief Supplies Officer at the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals from 1995- 1997, From there, He rose to become the Assistant Director at the Federal Ministry of Power and Steel in 1997 and was promoted to Deputy Director/Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister at the Federal Ministry of Transport, a position he held from 1999-2003.
He later served as the Director of Administration at the Nigerian Railway Corporations in 2003 and rose to the position of Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Aviation and later became the Director of Administration and Supplies at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency from 2005. He voluntarily retired from civil service at the level of a director and joined politics.
Bala Mohammed’s journey into politics began in 2007, when he picked up nomination to be elected as the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District under the platform of the All Nigerian People’s Party (ANPP).
He contested and won and served the people of Bauchi South Senatorial zone from 2007-2010.
While at the Senate Chamber, he became one of the foremost outspoken legislators in Nigeria and is recognised for his role in the execution of the ‘Doctrine of Necessity’, that brought in the emergence of the then Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President. He sat as a member of 8 Committees, including Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, and also as Secretary, Northern Senator’s Forum.
In April 2010, Senator Bala Mohammed assumed office as the Minister of FCT. During his tenure as FCT Minister, he brought extensive reforms that addressed the problems of waste in the land administration of the FCT, oversaw the installation of solar panel traffic lights, expansion of major road access within the FCT, completed the Usama Dam Water project, addressing the lack of portable water within the FCT and also instituted innovations for financial stability and employment opportunities such as, the FCT Internal Revenue Board, The Outdoor Advertising (Signage ) Agency and the FCTA Emergency Services.
In 2019, Bala Mohammed got elected as Bauchi State Governor, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). As the incumbent Governor of the state, his administration has streamlined government processes and protocols in recovering lost stolen government properties and funds while getting rid of ghost workers within the Bauchi State Civil Service.
Governor Bala Mohammed has revamped the state of Bauchi since he took office in 2019, he has made giant strides in all sectors for the state, especially in the education and health sectors. Primary health centres have been built and equipped with drugs at subsidized rates, Local Government Councils Secretariats
have also been constructed, while about 4,000 schools were built to ensure school-age students return to school.
Under his administration as the Bauchi State Governor, he launched the most successful and sustainable empowerment program in the history of Bauchi State, called the the Kaura Economic and Empowerment programme (KEEP), which is a grant scheme that empowers the youth and women, and also provides soft loans for traders and artisans of the state.
In January 2022, Governor Bala Mohammed declared his interest to run as a Presidential aspirant under the PDP. Charged with the mandate to bring about Unity in Nigeria.
His aim is to put Nigeria first as Top Priority, in a knowledge-driven administration, void of bias and division, where all tribes are recognised. His government would focus on giving equal opportunities to people with knowledge on how to re-invent the country irrespective of cultural and religious affiliation.
